SMITHERS (AP) — New River Health is opening its ninth school-based health center in southern West Virginia.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be held Aug. 21 for the Valley School-Based Health Center at Valley High School in Smithers.

The Register-Herald reports that speakers include Smithers Mayor Tom Skaggs and Fayette County Schools Superintendent Keith Butcher.

New River school health director Celi Van Dyke says the centers give students easier access to health care.

Services offered at New River's school-based centers include medical, dental and mental health care, along with health education.
