Scott High School football players catch little league burglars in the act

Posted: Updated:
Michael Belcher is a senior at Scott High School.  He and five other football players from Scott were driving to McDonalds Monday around 11 p.m.

They glanced over at the Madison little league field.

Belcher said, "We were driving back past the park and one of my buddies said that he saw two guys down on the field with two windows on their backs."

"They were stealing stuff," said Cody Brown.  "It was about midnight, somewhere around there.  We decided to pull down in there."

Kirk Price said, "They looked extremely suspicious with it.  They immediately turn and look at us and we saw them take of running."

"Whoever the two guys were, they just took off over the hill right on the field and just disappeared," said Belcher.

The students scared the thieves away, and Belcher called 911.  He said he wasn't always the type to turn people in, not until he met Rodney Kuhn a couple of years ago.

Kuhn is the president of Madison little league.

"He saved my life in a bad part of my life," Belcher said.  "I was getting in a lot of trouble.  He didn't even know me.  He took me in and saved from some bad things that were going to happen to me.  I'm still trying, to this day to repay him for it."

Now Belcher can say he helped the little league team, that in a way, helped him.  His teammates say it's about taking pride in where you're from.

Brown said, "Everyone around here tries to support each other.  We love each other.  It's a great community.  I'm proud to be a part of it."

"I am very proud to be a part of this community.  I will always say I'm from Madison, West Virginia," said Price.

When it comes to playing football, these guys say it's about more than just keeping score.  Brown said, "The biggest thing I've learned from playing sports is discipline and responsibility.

Price said, "I played little league down there, a bunch of the guys did.  It feels to just do our part.  If we see something, we tell people and try to do the right thing."

Madison Police officers said warrants have been issued for the suspects.

They say they expect arrests to be made soon.
