Kanawha County Metro 911 will be upgrading its phone system on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

It's the first step in a series of upgrades that will bring Next Generation 911 to Kanawha County, which is the ability to text. Officials have also said that the new system will be faster for dispatchers.

They expect the hour-long transition to go smoothly, but cell phones could have trouble getting through while the work is being done. "There could be a possibility around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning that if someone calls 911 from their cell phone they may receive a busy signal. If they do, we ask them to just hang up and try again," said Paul Dryden with Metro 911.

If you get a second busy signal, they have set up a series of emergency numbers to call instead.
