Beginning fall semester, Marshall University will offer students another academic option with the addition of the master's degree in public administration program.

The program starts Monday, Aug. 26, and is modeled to optimize ease and accessibility for those enrolled in the program, university officials said.

Until five years ago, the program was a joint program between Marshall and West Virginia University. Marybeth Beller, MPA director of Marshall University, said Marshall decided to create the program in order to improve the pre-existing chart model.

"Many students balance work and family with academic hours," Beller said. "We wanted maximum flexibility. The (previous) model wasn't working."

The new, modified program is an interdisciplinary program that offers students multiple different concentrations. Concentrations include nonprofit management, urban governance and general administration policy.

In a press release, Beller stated, "The College of Business and the departments of political science, geography, leadership studies, sociology and psychology are combining their expertise to offer students in the Tri-State region a flexible program."

Courses will be taught in Huntington, South Charleston and online. To better accommodate those with a full schedule or balancing family and academics, both daytime and evening courses will be available.

For more information about the program, contact Dr. Maybeth Beller at 304-696-2763 or beller@marshall.edu.
