The Roane County West Virginia Humane Society is working on plans to show off their adoptable pets at the Black Walnut Festival this year. The event will start Oct. 10, 2013 and continue through Oct. 13, 2013.

The group is planning to sell several items to benefit the shelter. The will also be conducting a drawing for a fall quilt during the festival. People attending the Black Walnut Festival Parade may also see the Roane Shelter float. The shelter's mascots and several members of the local humane society will be riding along as well.

"We hope to make pet owners aware of the importance of spaying and neutering. It will help control our overpopulation of our companion pets," said Roane County Humane Society President Sandy Bush.

Bush said the organization has been taking in around 200 animals monthly. Those animals are either found as strays, surrendered by their owners or part of animal cruelty situations. She said adoptions had dwindled recently, putting the shelter in a difficult situation. Bush is reminding pet owners to always check the shelter if their animals are missing to see if they have been picked up by someone or turned in to the shelter as a stray.

The fee to adopt a dog from the Roane County shelter is $60. The fee for cats is $50. Individuals who adopt animals from the facility receive a certificate to have them spayed or neutered at Ripley Paws in Ripley, West Virginia.

Donations are currently needed to help care for the animals. Bush said items needed most are puppy food, kitten food, dog and cat food, as well as kitty litter, cleaning supplies such as Pine-Sol, towels, paper towels, and blankets.
