CHARLESTON, WV -

Driving a school bus full of kids is a big responsibility, keeping them safe is an even bigger one.

That is why buses in Kanawha County, WV are relying on the help of a couple extra eyes.  There are a total of eight cameras inside and outside the bus that record video and audio.

"We have five inside the school bus and they are to monitor the drivers and the students and then there's one that points outside the windshield of the bus and then there are two on the side of the stop sign," said Peggy Whitacre, supervisor of transportation for the Elkview Bus Terminal.

The cameras cover very angle of the bus.  They help record what's happening in the event of an emergency.  The cameras also allow the school district to go back and review any kind of situation that may need to be looked at later.

"They're motion-sensor so as soon as someone steps on the bus the cameras kick on," Whitacre said.

The cameras automatically turn off ten minutes after the last person leaves the bus.

Whitacre told 13 News the cameras are beneficial for the safety of the students on board as well as the bus driver.

"We've had some issues of students saying a driver touched them and we pulled the video and the student was in the back seat the entire time and the driver never left the front seat," she said.

Cameras are also there to capture students bullying other students and fights.

"We have a lot of incidents when there are fights on the buses or bullying issues and we have to pull the camera to see what escalated and what started it," said Whitacre.

No one except the bus driver and supervisor can watch the tapes. Video is kept for two weeks minimum to make sure that every student, every bus driver and anyone that steps on the bus is safe.
