William C. Campbell, described by the West Virginia Golf Association as golf's greatest amateur, died around 4:45 p.m. Aug. 30 at his home in Lewisburg at age 90.

Campbell won the US Amateur and USGA Senior (twice) Amateur Championships, the Mexican Amateur Championship and the North and South Amateur Championship four times. He played in eight Walker Cup matches, undefeated in singles matches (7-0-1) and was the playing captain in 1956.

In West Virginia, Campbell holds the record for most West Virginia Amateur Championship titles, 15, and is a three-time champion of the West Virginia Open, according to the state Golf Association.

In 1956, Campbell was awarded the USGA's highest honor, the Bob Jones Award for Distinguished Sportsmanship. In 1982-1983, he served as president of the United States Golf Association, and he served two terms on its executive committee. Campbell was the third American to captain the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. He is the first and only person to ever head both of golf's worldwide governing bodies.

He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame and the PGA Hall of Fame.

Born May 5, 1923, Campbell is from Huntington and is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in history. He served 3 ½ years in the United States Army during World War II, where he went from private to captain. He was combat in ETO with the 100th Infantry Division.

Campbell was the owner and manager of Campbell Insurance from 1947 to present and was made a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
