KANAWHA COUNTY, WV -

Emergency crews responded to a chemical incident at the Catalyst Refinery in Institute today.

Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide mixed together and created a cloud at the plant around 11 a.m. Workers were evacuated from the plant and sent home. Catalyst Refiners estimated the release was about 950 pounds of nitric Acid. Clean up crews arrived on scene around 3 p.m. today. They will remain there until the spill is cleaned up and the building is safe for workers to return.

However, county officials are voicing their concerns because Catalyst Refiners failed to notify emergency responders from Kanawha County. The neighboring Bayer CropScience plant actually notified emergency responders of the spill.

Kanawha County 911 say that chemical plants must notify emergency responders 15 minutes after a spill occurs. This is the second time in several weeks a spill as occurred at Catalyst Refiners. Officials tell WOWKTV that corporate officials will be visiting the plant tomorrow to try and determine why chemical spills are happening at the plant.
