INSTITUTE, WV -

One team is looking to build on success, while the other is optimistic for a new beginning. NCAA Division II football opens this week. Both the University of Charleston and West Virginia State University open Saturday on the road.

After a 9-2 campaign from a year ago, the UC Golden Eagles are looking to take that next step.

"It's minor stuff that can make a major difference," said UC redshirt junior defensive lineman, Rockford Stone.

"If everyone buys into the system, sky's the limit," said senior quarterback, Maurice Leak.

Making the playoffs is one of those goals, as well as making some history.

"We have a chance to make history, winning the first Mountain East Conference Championship," said Leak.

At West Virginia State University, despite having some struggles in recent years, this season is all about starting new.

First year head coach, Jon Anderson, started the change from the ground floor.

"We taught them how to stretch, we taught them how to lift, we taught them how to practice the way we want it to be done.  The buy in factor has been outstanding," said Anderson.

Transfer starting quarterback, Tyler Seals, is another new face to the mix.

"It's good to be part of something new here. I think I can hopefully help to turn this place around," said Seals.

With a lot of changes to the Yellow Jackets' program, the team is optimistic for the future.

"It's a new day. We're just looking forward to the season," said junior linebacker Wenly Beliard.

University of Charleston will open their season on the road Saturday, Sept. 7 against Shaw University.  Kick-off is at 1 p.m.

West Virginia State University will also open their season on the road Saturday, Sept. 7 against Lock Haven University. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
