PARKERSBURG, WV (AP) -

West Virginians soon will have another farmers market for their fall and winter local shopping needs.

West Virginia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Walt Helmick said the new farmers market will open Oct. 5 in Parkersburg. It will operate the first Saturday of each month through April.

The market will be held in what was formerly the Swan Hotel in historic downtown Parkersburg. The building was obtained by the city after it traded a parking lot for the property.

At an event this week, Helmick said West Virginia consumes more than $7 billion in food products annually, but state residents only grow $500 million in food products.
