GRANDVIEW, WV (AP) — The future of a popular tunnel trail in the New River Gorge National River is uncertain due to concerns about its safety.

The National Park Service closed the tunnel trail at Grandview in the spring of 2011 after two engineering firms found structural defects. Their assessments also raised questions about the support system's stability.

The half-mile trail passes through a cave-like tunnel formed from rocks of various sizes and shapes.

The park service said Wednesday in a news release that repair costs are being assessed before a decision about the tunnel trail's future is made.
