I like to think of myself as a broad-minded person, open to new adventures, ready for anything that comes my way. This is especially true with food. I love to eat; I love to cook. So I was bowled over when a friend said to me, “You're a very picky eater.”

When the U.S. Postal Service attempted to honor the state of West Virginia by issuing a commemorative stamp to celebrate its 150th anniversary, it failed.

As I view the stamp, my reaction is that it more closely resembles a brown Middle Eastern sand dune on a foggy morning than a beautiful, verdant and splendid West Virginia mountainscape.

While visiting my post office recently, I asked to see the variety of stamps that are available for sale. You can see the selection and colorful choices available on one sheet. However, the West Virginia stamp offers no variation — the brown, colorless scene is repeated.

The Postal Service missed an opportunity to display and celebrate the beauty and splendid variation of our diversity. Leaders accepted this poor attempt to acknowledge our state's great beauty and colorful variety.
