WEIRTON (AP) — The former mayor of Weirton is free on $30,000 bond while awaiting trial on embezzlement charges.

Media outlets report that Mark Harris and his wife, Nycole, appeared Wednesday before Hancock County Circuit Judge Martin Gaughan.

The 44-year-old ex-mayor is charged with three counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy. His wife is charged with conspiracy.

Investigators say Mark Harris stole more than $16,000 between 2007 and 2011. City Attorney Vincent Gurrera says the missing money had been donated for a planned skate park. The theft was discovered after Harris left office.

The judge said the couple can return to their current home in Myrtle Beach, S.C., but must be back in court Oct. 15.

Harris served one term but did not seek re-election in 2011.
