Sheetz stores promote food service

Zoning for a new Sheetz store in Romney has been obtained. Officials are working on the site plan and a permit for construction will be requested in the next 30 days.

"Once we get the permit and the contractor set, the demolition on the existing commercial business and residences will begin," Evan Wyatt, engineer from Greenway Engineering said.

Wyatt said the new Sheetz store is a prototype of the new stores being built and will promote the food service in every aspect of their business.

"The new model store will accommodate dining inside and outside," Wyatt said.

Cost of the new Sheetz is estimated at $2 million.

There will be little, if any, disruption in service while construction of the new store takes place, Wyatt said.

The new store will be built approximately five feet behind the existing structure at the corner of U.S. 50 and Grafton Street by late summer 2014.

"Construction will be a bit complicated. The new store will be built just behind the old structure. After the new store is open it will take two days to tear down the old structure," Steve Augustine, director of real estate said in an earlier interview.

The new building will have stack stone on the bottom and colonial brick on top. The conventional red color is being replaced with burgundy.

Augustine said the old store would continue to operate during construction.

"Once the new store is in operation we will remove the existing store," Wyatt said. "After that we will shut down the gas service operation completely while that area is being re-done."

Wyatt said normally that process takes between 30 and 60 days from start to finish.

Inside tables of the new store will seat 32 and additional seating will be available at tables in front and along the left side of the building facing Route 50.

"Our new stores are less like a convenience store and more like a restaurant. We are calling them fast food convenience restaurants with gas," Augustine said.

Once the new gas pumps are in place the lot will have more than 30 parking spots.

"The projection of the store is to sell more food," said Augustine.

Therefore, he said, Sheetz will be hiring more employees.

Although it will own the building, Sheetz will lease the land on which is it located from a Romney businessman.
