The West Virginia Oil Marketers & Grocers Association, or OMEGA, raised $161,466 throughout August to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The group represents convenience stores, independent grocers and petroleum marketers across West Virginia, and the funds will help grant the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening conditions during the month of August.

The organization also raised nearly $255,000 in 2013 for organizations that help West Virginia children. OMEGA has collectively raised more than $1.8 million since 2003 for charities that benefit the health and safety of West Virginia children.

"Our members, as well as the West Virginia public, truly get behind these efforts to help our children," OMEGA President Jan Vineyard said in a news release. "The results of our August Make-A-Wish Foundation campaign and our April Children's Home Society effort prove this out.

"This is all about making a difference in a child's life, and we are very appreciative of the public who graciously supported this effort."

Vineyard said the money OMEGA raised will go to the southern and northern West Virginia chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and it will be used solely to grant children's wishes. The campaign included nearly 600 OMEGA-member convenience and grocery stores that sold "wish stars" for $1 from Aug. 1-30. The Division Street Par Mar Convenience Store in Parkersburg sold the highest number of stars – more than 4,000 – of any store.
