Two arrested in South Point copper theft

South Point, OH -

Two people have been arrested after South Point police caught them stealing more than 2,000 pounds of copper from Intermountain Electronics. Kelly Byron and Whitney Pell of Huntington are facing felony theft charges. They told authorities it took them months to steal over $17,000 worth of metal from the place they were hired to clean.

"When they got their camera system up and running they realized that yes, some of their employees had been stealing from them," said Tim Brandt, a patrolman for South Point Police.

The suspects were arrested when they reported to work on Wednesday. Officers say they didn't look surprised when they were finally caught.

"One way or the other, no matter how many times you do it, you always get caught," said Brandt.

South Point police say the video surveillance cameras at the business enabled them to catch the suspects.

"Cameras are the greatest deterrent and the greatest source," said Brandt. "Without them it makes it hard to conduct investigations,"

Brandt says the suspects allegedly stole items from other businesses they were hired to clean as well, including a few banks.

We reached out to Intermountain Electronics for comment, but no one was available to speak at this time.
