A former Mrs. West Virginia was arrested Friday evening and charged with DUI after nearly hitting a Kanawha County deputy's cruiser.

Authorities say 27-year-old Marissa K. Loftis of Sissonville, WV was traveling at a high rate of speed heading south on I-77.  Deputies said she was driving a 2009 Mercedes Benz and changed lanes nearly striking a deputies' cruiser.

According to authorities, Captain Bailes with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office initiated a traffic stop and arrested Loftis after she failed a field sobriety test.  Her blood alcohol level was 0.213%.  The legal limit for the State of West Virginia is 0.08%.  Loftis had a passenger in her vehicle at the time of the arrest, authorities said.  He was identified as 39-year-old William Shrewsbury, Jr., of Charleston.  He owned the vehicle driven by Mrs. Loftis.

Authorities say Shrewsbury was also intoxicated.  His preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol content that was more than triple the legal limit for drivers.  He was charged with permitting DUI.  He was not immediately arrested and was released to the care of others at the scene.

Additionally, deputies said Shrewsbury had been cited earlier in the day for speeding on I-64. Loftis was a passenger at that time.  Deputies said neither appeared to be intoxicated or under the influence during that traffic stop

William Shrewsbury Jr. is also a licensed practicing attorney in the State of West Virginia. Marissa K. Loftis was crowned Mrs. West Virginia in 2012.

The investigation is continuing at this time.
