CHARLESTON, WV -

The Thundering Herd (2-2) football team came up just short as they fell 29-21 to Virginia Tech in triple overtime Saturday afternoon.

The Hokies, Logan Thomas, broke the 21-all tie in the third overtime with a touchdown run. Thomas then ran for a 2-point conversation.

Marshall led the game at halftime 21-14.

In the second overtime, the Herd had an opportunity to win the game on a field goal, but that attempt was blocked.

On fourth down in the third overtime, Marshall's quarterback Rakeem Cato hit receiver Davonte Allen in stride on fourth down, but Allen couldn't hang onto the pass.

Marshall has a bye week, then will open conference play at home against University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday, October 5th.
