CLAY, WV (AP) — The Clay County Commission has named a new sheriff to replace one who pleaded guilty to wiretapping.

Media outlets report that commissioners unanimously approved 60-year-old Garrett Samples' appointment as sheriff on Wednesday.

Garrett's predecessor, Miles Slack, resigned last week and pleaded guilty to a federal charge that he hacked his wife's work computer.

Commission President Mike Pierson says Garrett was among 16 applicants for the sheriff's job.

Samples currently is the county's home confinement officer. His appointment as sheriff is effective Oct. 1.

He says he doesn't plan to make major changes in the sheriff's department.
