CLAY, WV -

The Clay County Commission announced a new sheriff after the previous sheriff was charged with wiretapping and resigned.

Commissioners unanimously voted to appoint Garrett Samples as sheriff during their meeting Wednesday.

"The sheriff's office here in Clay County is a great bunch of guys," Samples said. "I think I have the support of the Sheriff's Department, I think I have the support of the community, so I don't look for any changes so to speak."

Samples will become sheriff on Oct 1. Samples was chosen following a controversy involving the previous sheriff, Miles Slack.

Slack put a keystroke logger on his ex-wife's work computer, which is owned by the state Supreme Court. Slack pleaded guilty on Sept. 17 to the charges.

"It was a bad decision and he paid for it dearly," Samples said.

Samples, 60, has worked as the county's home confinement officer since March 1. He is also a process server.

His experience in law enforcement spans nearly 15 years. He previously worked at South Central Regional Jail and the 911 center.

Samples said he hopes to establish a day reporting center in Clay, an idea also supported by the commissioners.

"When we send young people to jail, the only thing we're doing is teaching them to be as good criminal," said Samples, citing the county's drug problem.

Samples is married and has two children from a previous marriage.

Commissioners said 16 people applied for the job; only five candidates had experience in law enforcement.
