PARKERSBURG, WV (AP) — Parkersburg is getting a grant to fund new school resource officer positions.

Rep. David McKinley said the $343,940 grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The funding will allow three officers to be hired.

McKinley says the officers will help students feel more secure, give parents piece of mind and provide additional resources for crime prevention.

The Justice Department program offers grants to state and local law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire officers. The program provides the salary and benefits for officer and deputy hires for three years.
