CHARLESTON, WV (AP) -

A creek restoration project in Preston and Taylor counties is being honored by a national group.

The Three Fork Creek Watershed Restoration Project received the Appalachian Regional Award from the National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs during the group's national conference last week at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels.

West Virginia's Abandoned Mine Lands Program began the $750,000 project to treat acid mine drainage in July 2010.

The Department of Environmental Protection says pre-treatment surveys conducted in 2010 found only one fish in Three Fork Creek. Eighteen months later, a survey found more than 1,600 fish.

The DEP worked with West Virginia University and a local watershed group on the project.
