Alpha Foundation announces research grant recipients

CHARLESTON, WV -

A foundation that focuses on miner safety and health will announce its first round of recipients today, who will receive approximately $10 million in awards.

The Alpha Foundation was created as part of a "non-prosecution agreement" between the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of West Virginia, and Alpha Natural Resources after the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster in 2010.

Alpha acquired Massey, which operated the UBB mine in Montcoal. Twenty-nine miners died in what's considered to be the worst U.S. mining accident in decades.

A portion of that $210 settlement was set aside of safety purposes. The foundation announced its first round of companies to receive winnings.

Areas of focus include safety, health, safety and health management and training.

The foundation received more than 160 proposals in January 2013.

West Virginia University Foundation and the University of Kentucky are among the winners.
