Tips for hiring a contractor

Posted: Updated:

Ruth Pendleberry told me she got a deck built at her home in St. Albans by a contractor who she said did a bad job. She showed me where it is uneven. Ruth wanted me share her story to help others avoid hiring someone they wish they hadn't.

I went to West Virginia Attorney General's Office to get tips he has for consumers before hiring a contractor.

"Most contractors are good people that are trying to do the right, but there are always some scammers out there that are trying to take advantage of people," said West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

Before you hire a contractor, Morrisey said you need to research them. You can do research online through sites like Angie's List.

"Call up, get references figure out what work they have done in the past in your neighborhood," Morrisey suggested.

Morrisey also said you make a contract of the work expected. He said you should also get several bids from different contractors before you choose one.

"Do it the right way so that you know I am going to x services for x price, bid it out so that you are able to get the lowest bidder that can do the work."

He said it is important that you always make sure your contractor is licensed, you can do that online.

Finally, he said you should never pay all the money up-front.

"Do not under any circumstances pay all the money up front, because that's a sure fire way to ensure your work is not going to get done the right way."

He said Preparing before you hire a contractor can save you time, money and grief.
