The federal government shutdown continues for a fourth day, and it is ruining an important day several people planned for two Nicholas County, WV deputies.

Vanessa Stapleton prepared months for a 5K run in honor of her husband, Deputy Buddy Stapleton, and Sgt. Tommy Allison.  Both are Nicholas County deputies who were shot and injured during a standoff July 6. The event was scheduled for this Saturday at Battle Run Campground and was supposed to boost the spirits of both men and raise money to cover their medical expenses.

"Knowing that he has support out there is a very big deal for him, because he is frustrated not being able to do things he used to do," said Vanessa Stapleton, who came up with the idea.

But just a few days before the race, the family received devastating news. Battle Run Campground was closed indefinitely because of the government shutdown.

"We had every aspect covered and this was not one of them," said Stapleton. "It was just too late to reschedule."

Event organizers scrambled to try and find a new venue. They say every place they looked was booked.

"For the next three weekends, there are other 5Ks in the area going on. And unfortunately this was the last weekend to be able to have it at Battle Run because of the season," said Kacie Blake, a Summersville resident.

But the Stapleton family says it's determined to pull through despite all obstacles. When the new date of the race is announced, the kids say they hope for a big turnout.

"I get that it's old news and stuff, but they are still injured. Tommy's hand is getting a little better, but my dad's leg will give out still," said Braden Jones, Buddy's 11-year-old son.

Organizers of the Hot Pursuit 5K race plan to meet next week to set up a new date. We will pass along any details on how to register and donate when the information becomes available.
