Students at WVSU in Institute, WV upset over shooting

Students at West Virginia State University said they were upset about how a shooting at an unsanctioned party bearing the schools logo will reflect on the university.

Signs welcomed the community to campus for homecoming festivities Friday. Freshmen Ali Haynes and Summer Sword spent their afternoon watch the baseball team practice.

They said they were insulted that the school's name and image would be attached to violence, during a time that students should be showing pride in the university.

'They are really trying to make it a positive place here and now it is just like that kind of put a damper on things," Haynes said.

Haynes and sword said someone put a flyer under their door inviting them to the party. They didn't go but presumed, based on the logo, that it was a school sanctioned event.

Vice President of Community Relations for the University, Kimberly Osborne, released a statement. "The safety and security of the entire campus community, including the students, is of the utmost importance," Osborne said. She also said the event was not affiliated with the school in any way.
