Sam's Club to aid furloughed government workers

SOUTH CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

A number of businesses across the country, local and corporate, are banding together in face of the government shutdown.

In response to the U.S. government shutdown of domestic military base commissaries, all U.S. Sam's Club locations will offer free shopping passes to military personnel, retirees and their families so they may continue to save on home and business essentials.

"It's been very well received," said South Charleston Sam's Club Assistant Manager Joe Weese. "We had 4 or 5 people today, a couple on Thursday and several today. We don't have a big military presence here. But there is a lot of National Guard members here and it gives them a great opportunity to come in."

The offer will continue as long as the government shutdown is in effect.

Military personnel, retirees and government employees must provide a government ID to be permitted to shop at Sam's Club.
