Defense pacing Marshall University's football team

Posted: Updated:

One look at last year's defensive stats compared to this year's is for the Thundering Herd football team and you'll see a glaring difference.

In some categories, the Herd ranked in the 100's. Thus far, you can find Marshall ranked in the top 10 or 20 in those same categories. Marshall's head football coach says part of the improvement is due to better personnel.

"We're a lot more athletic," said Holliday. "I've sat back and said for three years we need to get more athletic at the linebacker position and we also got to get more athletic in the secondary and I think we've done that to an extent."

Other notes from Doc Holliday's weekly press conferences:

- Jordan Jeffries football career is over due to a hip injury.

- Due to the 34 players from the state of Florida on the Herd, Holliday said on Friday he will set aside a two hour window for those players to meet with family and friends.
