OAK HILL -

Most of us are enjoying the crisp fall weather, but one state agency is seeing white. Workers with the Division of Highways are planning ahead to make sure they are ready for the first snow flake to fall. 59News got an up close look at preparations to make roads safe this winter.

Blue skies, vibrant colored leaves and cool crisp air-- this is what comes to mind when most think about October. But the Division of Highway workers are thinking snow!  If 59News viewers remember last year right around Halloween Super Storm Sandy dumped snow all over our region.

"Of course you remember this from last year, our area hit with super storm sandy and we saw a quit of bit of snow and this was the last week of October.  So the best time to prepare is of course before we see pictures like this, because if you remember Super Storm Sandy dumped 4 feet of snow is some parts of our area," Meteorologist James Hopkins said.

This is why October is a critical month for snow preparations.

"We always do it early because as everyone knows last year around this time we had that huge storm hit and anytime in October right around this time of the month it can happen and we have to be prepared," Danny Hypes, Fayette County Highway administrator said.

Taking inventory of salt supply is just one of the preparations underway. They have 3,000 tons of salt ready to be used this winter.  Also happening is a through inspection of the snow trucks. All 27 snow plows in Fayette County will be checked for mobility and safety. This way the fleet will be in tip-top shape to clear the 880 miles of roads they are responsible for.

Checks and inspections will be conducted all this week at the Division of Highways headquarters in Greenbrier and Raleigh Counties.
