Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and West Virginia Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox announced Oct. 9 more than $20 million in state and federal grants will be distributed to airports throughout the state.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation's Aeronautics Commission allocated more than $2 million for matching funds, and federal funds for the projects totaled more than $20 million from the Federal Aviation administration's Airport Improvement Program. Eighteen public airports were awarded funds for airport infrastructure, safety and improvement projects.

"West Virginia's airports play a critical role in the economy," Tomblin said in a news release. "They support businesses, manufacturers and emergency responders, maintaining local jobs and creating economic opportunity."

The airports to receive funds include: Mid-Ohio Valley Airport to improve the runway safety area; Appalachian Regional Airport to construct a building; Braxton County Airport to rehab the runway; Eastern WV Regional Airport to purchase land and rehab the taxiway; Elkins-Randolph Co. Airport to rehab the taxiway; Fairmont Municipal Airport to construct a taxiway; Greater Cumberland Regional Airport to rehab the runway; Greenbrier Valley Airport to construct a taxiway; Logan Airport to install weather reporting equipment; Marshall County Airport for a T-Hangar site and building; Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport to rehab the taxiway and runway; Morgantown Municipal Airport to rehab a terminal building; North Central WV Airport to install perimeter fencing and to update the airport master plan; Philippi-Barbour Co. Regional Airport to install a fuel farm; Raleigh Co. Memorial Airport to rehab the terminal building; Summersville Airport to rehab the runway; Tri-State Airport for a sustainable management plan, to improve airport drainage, rehab taxiways and acquire a handicap passenger lift device;  Upshur Co. Regional Airport to construct a building; and Yeager Airport for a sustainable management plan and to remove obstructions.
