    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

The House of Hounds in Nitro, WV will host a Halloween Pet Parade Saturday night Oct. 12.

Pets will be parading along First Avenue and 22nd street. Registration is at 6 p.m.

The best dressed critters can win prizes.

After the costume parade pet owners can bring their dogs to the House of Hounds for an after party.

"There will be lots of dogs that is for sure," said Brannon Carrier, owner of the House of Hounds. "There will be costumes, fun and just a good time."

Some of the proceeds from the event will be donated to help with spay and neuter projects and dog rescue.
