CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

The week of Oct. 6-Oct. 12 is Fire Prevention Week across the country. This year's theme, "Preventing Kitchen Fires."

Firefighters with the Charleston Fire Department hosted an open house for anyone wanting to take a look at what goes on inside of the fire house Saturday.
Dozens of guests had the chance to talk with firefighters about proper prevention techniques.

"It's very important because we want to keep people safe," said Captain Ken Tyree of the Charleston Fire Department. "Not only do we want to keep people safe across the country, but also around here at home, for people here in the Kanawha Valley."

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, according to the latest National Fire Prevention Association's research.

Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen, which is more than any other place in the home.
