Bridge Construction harms business in Nitro, St. Albans

When the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge came crumbling down so did the profits of many businesses nearby.

At Dwight's, located in St. Albans, West Virginia, the money isn't coming in as it use to. Although the restaurant is full of customers, it's still losing a chunk of business to the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge.

"I have really terrific customers and they've taken care of me since the bridge has been closed. Although I have to say I really have missed my Nitro customer," said Mike Messinger, owner of Dwight's.

The bridge connecting St. Albans to Nitro has been closed since January and is scheduled to reopen November first. Yet months of repair has meant detours and less traffic for businesses nearby.

"It's really inconvenient to drive around to the interstate. We also deliver to Nitro and since the bridge has been closed it's kind of dried that business out," said Messinger.

Businesses on the other side of the bridge are also suffering. Produce Junction is only steps away from the Nitro side and they're not seeing their profits grow.

"The bridge is devastating to business. We were doing fairly well until the bridge closed down," said Richard Stadler, owner of  Produce Junction.

Stadler says he's lost almost 90 percent of his business. His store use to average 300 to 400 dollars a day but now 20 dollars is considered a good day.

"There's no customers, there's no traffic. There's no one going by," said Stadler.

Like other businesses in the area, Stadler says all he can do is wait.

"After a year layoff from where they normally shop and they start shopping somewhere else, they may never come back. So it could be a slow process but we hope to speed it up some," said Stadler.

The bridge is expected to open Friday, November 1st. Officials say there will be a special 'walk the bridge party' the night before.
