Healthcare professionals from across the region are in Morgantown for the WVU Extension Service Diabetes Symposium.
The 13th annual event began Wednesday and is sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service and the West Virginia University Office of Continuing Education.
It's the first year the event has been in Morgantown.
WVU Extension Service said 12 percent of West Virginians have diabetes.
The symposium supports a statewide effort to fight the disease.
"Diabetes is not a death sentence. People can live a long healthy life with diabetes as long as they take care of themselves and we help their healthcare providers and community leaders learn the best practices," said Cindy Fitch, of the WVU Extension Service.
Tickets for the symposium are $120 at the door.
The event is at the Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown and will run until Friday, October 18.
