LOGAN, WV -

An early morning fire Monday claimed the lives of two young children in Logan, WV.

It happened at a duplex on Canton Lane.

Firefighters said they tried to save 4 year old Shania Sydney and 3 year old Dontarius Gardner, but it was too late.

Two adults managed to escape without injury.

Investigators said there weren't any smoke detectors in the house.

"We came home Sunday night and around 9 they went to bed. This morning we are without them," said their stepfather Michael Williams Monday. "Dontarius had a heart of gold and Shania was pretty as a button."

Williams said on a typical day the kids would have been out in the alley in front of their home playing with their toys.

He said their laughter would fill the air. But Monday it is a sense of sadness on the street as everyone tried to come to grips with what happened.

"What I will miss most about Dontarius is never seeing him play football and Shania not cheerleading. We will miss them," Williams said.

The family has set up a fund for donations to help with funeral and burial expenses.
