Carving starts at Kenova, WV Pumpkin House

KENOVA, WV -

You might think it takes you a while to design and carve your favorite pumpkin, but how long do you think it takes to carve 3,000? Ric Griffith and his volunteers do it in less than a week.

Griffith says his pumpkin carving started when his children were young and continued to grow until he had so many he had to place some on the roof.

Now he and the neighbors get together at his Kenova home and line the back yard with hundreds of pumpkins as part of a carving tradition that only occurs this time of year.

Griffith creates his pumpkin masterpieces by first drawing out a design. Volunteers cut the bottoms off the pumpkins, then they get scooped out, and finally they are taken to the shed to be carved.

Workers use a saw to carve the shapes and designs for each pumpkin. Griffith also says each pumpkin is soaked in chlorine water to keep them preserved.  Each unique pumpkin is placed in his yard and home exactly where he wants them.

Some new sights this year include a pumpkin piano where visitors can play notes on different pumpkins and a giant 16-foot rising Grim Reaper behind the musical wall.

Griffith says volunteers are always welcome to help out and he hopes to have everything on display Saturday, October 26.

There is no admission to the event.
