Federal funding coming for skateboarding park in Huntington, WV

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

As part of an ongoing redevelopment of Harris Riverfront Park, federal funding is coming for the City of Huntington to construct a new skateboarding park.

The announcement came on Tuesday. "This Federal funding helps complete the partnership to make Harris Riverfront Park, a true gem on the Ohio, shine even brighter," said Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va. "The new skate park enhances safety for kids and family enjoyment. As budgets tighten in Washington, I continue to make the case that long-term investments that improve our downtowns and boost our City's economy should not fall victim to shortsighted budget politics."

The City of Huntington is partnering with the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District to integrate elements of a "street" skateboarding park into the newly greened landscape of Harris Riverfront Park. The $50,000 grant, awarded by the National Park Service Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which is a partnership program that provides matching funds for the development of outdoor recreation sites and facilities, will provide skateboard enthusiasts with a safe place to practice away from busy pedestrian streets.
