Sue Bonham didn't waste any time hugging four firefighters from the Sissonville Volunteer Department Monday.
Belfry High School football head coach Philip Haywood won USA Today's Best Coach in the Nation award. Haywood received more than 1.5 million votes in the final round as he received just over 46 percent of the total vote. In all, more than 12 million votes were cast in the three rounds of the competition.
The Belfry athletic department will receive $2,000 as first prize. As one of the eight finalists, the school will also receive a banner.
Philip Haywood, the head coach of the football team at Belfry High School in Kentucky, has a lead in USA Today's poll of the Best Coach in the Nation. Haywood has compiled a 362-125 record in his 38 seasons. He's won two state championships along with four state runner-ups.
The community got behind this competition and led Haywood past the first two rounds. In this final stage, he's one of eight remaining coaches. Voting ends at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The coach's winning school receives $2,000 towards their athletic department.
