Summersville Lake has been lowered to a level 55 feet below its normal winter pool level to allow for basic maintenance and inspection of the intake gates, according to the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

The lake is expected to reach the needed level Nov. 4, and it will be kept there for about two weeks.

All winter boat launching areas at Summersville Lake are closed during the drawdown period, but following the maintenance work, the lake will be brought back to its normal winter pool level and the winter launching ramps will be reopened.

Visitors are urged to stay a safe distance from the intake structure during the work. Walking or climbing on the intake structure is prohibited, as well as driving vehicle through the lake bed.

Gauley River users who are below Summersville Dam should plan for periods of reduced flows from the dam during the work, and there will be brief periods of zero flow from the dam to facilitate scuba diving work and tunnel inspections.

The normal winter pool level is 1,575 feet above mean sea level, and the drawdown will make it about 1,520 feet above mean sea level.

If the inspection reveals any additional maintenance requirements, the drawdown may be extended.
