HUNTINGTON, WV -

Sexual assault happens more often than recognized and having the proper training can help get more children the help they need.

About 20 registered nurses from Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Indiana voluntarily came to Marshall University for specialized training on pediatric sexual assaults. The purpose of the training is to provide basic knowledge specific to pediatric forensic evaluation.

Nurses were taught how to recognize, collect and preserve evidence; interview victims and link them to vital community resources for follow-up.

The five-day training also covers how to interview the child, patterned injuries and mock trials.
