ST. ALBANS, WV -

The football field is typically a place where athletic accomplishments are the center of attention.
But this Friday night the lights will shine on a different type of success. Several schools in St. Albans, WV will celebrate the kind of success that happens in the classroom.

"We are very proud of our kids," said Hayes Middle School Principal, Scott Monty.  "We love taking the opportunity to recognize those that are doing a great job."

School principals in St. Albans started dreaming up an idea a year or so ago to reward students for success on the Westest.

"Our numbers were up in both reading and math," said St. Albans High School Principal Jeff Kelley.

They came up with a plan to give students that achieved mastery or above on the standardized exam a magic ticket. The ticket comes with special privileges.

"The magic ticket was an inspiration from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," said Meagan Hedrick, a teacher at the school. "Each kid that achieved those scores received a magic ticket to the game."

Students with those tickets won't just get into the game for free. They are also going to be invited out onto the field to be recognized.

"There is such an emphasis on sports that it is great that we can reward them and honor them and celebrate their successes in the classroom too," Hedrick said.

Hayes Middle School earned the most magic tickets among the St. Albans area schools.

School leaders said they are hoping to make the recognition an annual event.
