The University Healthcare Regional Cancer Program, based at Berkeley Medical Center, has been granted a three-year accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

The program received accreditation with commendation following an on-site evaluation conducted in September. Accreditation with commendation is awarded when a program exceeds the standards, delivering an exceptionally high level of care. The program has earned accreditation with commendation since 2008.

"We are dedicated to offering the best in cancer care," said Medical Director Dr. Eric Bonnem. "The fact that our cancer program has once again been recognized at this level by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons speaks to the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary program."

The survey standards include cancer committee leadership, cancer data management and cancer registry operations, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and staff support as well as quality improvement. The survey found the program exceeded seven of the eight standards. To maintain approval, facilities with CoC-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.

The University Healthcare Cancer Program was initially established in 1991 at Berkeley Medical Center, then City Hospital.
