    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

PINCH, WV -

A crash in Kanawha County sent two women to the hospital on Friday morning. The head-on collision happened at 10:30 a.m. on Pinch Run Road near the intersection of Waters Edge Drive, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

A vehicle driven by Charlene Copen, 54, Blacklick, Ohio, veered off the roadway, then across the road into the opposite lane where it struck another vehicle. That vehicle was driven by Lena Parsons, 44, Amma, West Virginia.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to Charleston Area Medical Center. Parsons was initially trapped in her vehicle. Firefighters were able eventually able to extricate her from the vehicle. Copen was thrown through the front passenger window of her pickup truck.

No charges had been filed as of Friday, Nov.1, but an investigation is ongoing.
