Barges May Carry Drilling Wastewater Down the Ohio River
The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a proposal that will allow barges to carry hydraulic fracturing wastewater in bulk.
With the shale gas boom in the Ohio Valley, the area may be seeing this procedure along the Ohio River. Officials say the process gives energy companies an additional option in transporting wastewater from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to disposal locations in other states.
The proposal is subject to a 30-day public comment period. So far, the proposal has not gone into effect.
