More coal miners could be out of work in 2014 if a contract is not signed to keep three mines in Greenbrier County open.

Greenbrier Minerals, LLC is located in Rupert.  Vice President and Human Resources Administrator Gary Groves said the Mountaineer No. 1 and No. 3 mines, along with the Midland No. 2 mine could be idled by the end of 2013.

Employees of the mines have been notified that the mines will close Dec. 31 if a contract is not reached with companies that buy the coal from Greenbrier Minerals.

Those in the area are worried that the layoffs will mean less money for local businesses. "It's like a domino effect," said Ray Stokes, a near by resident, "if the miners don't have a job they can't buy groceries at Krogers, they can't go to the grocery store, they can't go to rite aid. they just can't support all the businesses around here."

The company is required to give notice to its employees in the event of reductions. Groves said while the notifications have been sent, the company hopes to reach an agreement with coal buyers before the end of the year.  If the mines are idled, Groves said the closures would affect 100 jobs.
