West Virginia University students packed the Erickson Alumni Center Wednesday night for a very special guest: CONSOL Energy CEO J. Brett Harvey.
The West Virginia Business Hall of Fame Inductee addressed the company's recent decision to sell all five of its longwall coal mines in the state, saying the move puts the company in a position to take its resources and expand them as quickly as possible for its shareholders.
"If you look at what we've done, we've really shifted focus onto gas to grow 30 percent, and that's the quickest rate of return for our shareholders," said Harvey.
Harvey's presentation was followed by a Q&A session, and he shared some advice with students.
"I would say point your career towards where the world is going...I would point it towards natural gas, the new technologies...and I am a big believer in if you're going to go do a job, be the best at it," said Harvey. "I tell my own children, whatever you do in life, if you own a tire shop, be the best tire changer. Really, just work at it, get the right education, and just give it that extra effort because extra effort pays off."
The event was part of the College of Business and Economics' Distinguished Speaker Series.
