CHARLESTON, WV -

It was a bust day at Advance Auto Parts in South Charleston, WV.

With winter weather on the way, it is time to make sure your vehicle is ready to get you where you need to go.

There are many things to think about when it comes to getting your vehicle prepared for the cold weather.

But a little advance planning can keep you from getting stuck out in the freezing temperatures.

"The car needed jumped the other day," explained Mike Bloom. He stopped by Advance Auto Parts in South Charleston, WV Monday to get his battery checked. "I figured I better come and check it before winter gets here."

A short test gave him the comfort of knowing his battery was in good condition.

Steve Basham is a Double Master Technician at Steve and Stacy's Service Center on Charleston's West Side. He said now is the time to make sure your battery is clean as well.

"Make sure the terminals are clean so there is no possibility of there being enough corrosion to isolate the terminals from the battery," Basham explained.

He said when it comes to winter weather driving some tires are better than others.

If you can afford them, there are tires with special technology just for winter driving.  If that isn't in your budget you can make sure the tread on the tires you are using is up to standard.

"If you are on the interstate and hit some standing water it could easily propel you into another lane or flip you around," Basham said. "It is a good time to have a lot of tread depth."

Basham also recommends getting under the hood and looking for possible problems. Repair leaks, check windshield wipers and make certain all of the fluids are filled.

AAA offers some other tips. Check your radiator coolant strength. The recommended protection level is -36 degrees. But make certain your car is cool before your check this. Check your air filters by holding them up to the light. If you can't see through the filter, get a new one. And also check your lights and signals.
