CHARLESTON, WV -

According to Sarah Tucker, vice chancellor for community and technical college education in West Virginia, a trend is occurring in community colleges.

On Nov. 18, Tucker explained to lawmakers in the Legislative Oversight Commission on Education Accountability that the occurring trend is a disparity between the number of males and females in community colleges.

"We've seen a much higher decline in male enrollment over the past year," she said. "This is true for both enrollment and graduation numbers."

What is the reason for females outnumbering their male peers?

Tucker said that while health programs have been a real pull for females, some technical programs have had a hard time retaining men.

By focusing on technical programs that are more likely to enroll males and with a new Department of Labor grant, Tucker said males will hopefully be attracted into continuing technical colleges.

"We do want to increase the number of males coming to our institutions," she said.

Although budget cuts are more than likely to occur in the near future, Tucker said she is ready to take on that challenge.

"Budget cuts will be challenging," she said. "We're very aware of this situation and we're trying to come up with creative ideas for how to handle it."
