Westwood, KY firefighters say brush fires may have been deliberately set

Posted: Updated:

A brush fire in Westwood, KY Tuesday afternoon is under investigation and considered suspicious in nature according to fire officials who responded to the scene.

Members of the Westwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call of a brush fire on New Buckley road near Westwood around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday November 19, 2013.

When crews arrived three separate fires were burning. The fires were several yards away from each other all the way to the top of a hill.

Crews used rakes and shovels to create a fire break and used water cans to put out the fires.

Deputy Fire Chief Tim England says he believes the fires were deliberately set because most of the leaves and debris were damp, and burning embers could not travel the distance between the fires without a strong wind.

England says no homes were in danger, but adds if you do live in a wooded area, you should remove all leaves and debris away from your home to prevent a brush fires from getting too close.

He also added that anyone who sees smoke coming from a wooded area should contact 911 immediately.
