The Norfolk Southern line through Wayne County was back in partial service the night of Nov. 19 and should be fully restored by Nov. 21.

The railroad had shut down its mainline track through Wayne County while repair crews worked on a 40-foot section that was washed out by a weekend storm.

"The first train, a coal train, went through at 6:10 last night at walking speed," NS spokesman Robin Chapman said Nov. 20. "Work continues today, and we anticipate having the second line back in service Thursday."

The washout occurred about six miles from Kenova near the site of the Prichard intermodal facility. One of two lines along the Big Sandy River washed out, and the other was shut down temporarily while repairs were underway.

The track is part of the Heartland Corridor intermodal route and is heavily used for coal and general merchandise shipments.
